Hello, Royal Clubbers, it’s Millie here wishing you a happy Tuesday wherever you are. It seems to be a moment for green-fingered royals as King Charles and Queen Camilla paid a special visit to the Chelsea Flower Show this week, accompanied by our Royal Editor, Emily Nash, who was close by to observe all the best moments of the day.
The royal couple toured the Chelsea Flower Show, taking special notice of the King’s Rose in his button hole, a new bloom created by rose producer David Austin in support of the King’s Foundation.
As Emily noted in her Friday newsletter, King Charles is not alone in his appreciation for mother nature. Princess Catherine follows in her royal father-in-law’s footsteps by sharing his deep love of all things green, while Prince William’s work with Earthshot speaks to his commitment to the climate.
We’d love to hear from you – are you green-fingered? Let us know by casting a vote below…
When footballing royalty meets actual royalty
As I mentioned, our Royal Editor Emily Nash was on the scene and witnessed the moment when King Charles stopped by to speak to footballer David Beckham. She shared an update from her rather royal outing:
It was a treat to return to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show yesterday to cover the King and Queen’s visit. The showground looked spectacular, the sun shone and the monarch was clearly in his element as I watched him tour the gardens, plant exhibitions and stands. Despite having a pre-planned route mapped out for him, he couldn’t help stopping to chat when something elsewhere grabbed his attention, and given his huge passion for all things gardening, it happened a lot!
Luckily he returned to the route just in time to be reunited with Queen Camilla at the Highgrove Shop Stand, where products being sold to support his King’s Foundation are on display all week. It helped, of course, that one of the charity’s newest ambassadors, a certain David Beckham, was on hand to greet them for the ceremonial unveiling. And he couldn’t have been more on brand, wearing the newly launched King’s Rose (sales of which will also benefit the charity) in his buttonhole for the occasion.
The King and Queen are clearly fond of the former England captain and appeared to check whether he had received something from them – possibly a 50th birthday gift.
“Glad you got the roses,” said Camilla, after he told the King: “It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.”
Prince William has long been friends with David Beckham, having bonded over the bid to bring the Fifa World Cup to England back in 2010.
So it’s fascinating to see him bonding with another generation 15 years on. What might once have seemed an unlikely pairing – between monarch and footballing royalty – seems to be developing into a genuinely warm friendship.
It’s common to see lots of royals and celebrities at the Chelsea Flower Show, and every year it’s a big draw. Have you ever been? Vote below!
We also wanted to share some footage from the flower-filled day, which you can watch below.
