Hello Royal Clubbers, it's Millie here.
After a busy week last week with Wimbledon and the French state visit, it’s been somewhat calmer on the royal beat over recent days.
But before we dive into the best royal pictures and the diary, let's take a little look back at some royal history.
On This Day…
On 19 July 1545, King Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose, sank in the Solent near Portsmouth.
The ship weighed 600 tonnes and was the sister ship of Peter Pomegranate. Mary and Peter are thought to be references to saints, while the rose was the symbol of King Henry VIII, and the pomegranate the symbol of his wife, Queen Katherine of Aragon.
Both vessels were designed to carry cannons, and sure enough in 1512, 19-year-old King Henry declared war on France. The earliest record of the Mary Rose in battle is at the Battle of St Mathieu on 10 August 1512, where her guns took the Grand Louise out of commission and killed 300 men.
The Mary Rose’s demise came over 30 years later during the Battle of the Solent, which was again fought against French forces
An eyewitness report claimed that the Mary Rose fired all guns on the starboard side and turned when the wind caught her sails and the open gunports were pushed below the waterline, flooding the hull with water.
73 died on that fateful day, and the Mary Rose sank below the waves, not to be recovered until 11 October 1982, when King Charles watched as the wreck was lifted by crane from the water.
Best Royal Pictures of The Week
Spanish royals
The Spanish royals made quite the picture as Princess Leonor, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Princess Sofia attended a presentation of royal dispatches of employment at Escuela Naval. Princess Leonor has received the Grand Cross of Naval Merit with white badge, a distinction that recognises her training and commitment to the military career, in the context of the forthcoming completion of her studies at the Naval Military School. The ceremony took place during the ceremony of delivery of Royal Dispatches and appointments to the new officers of the Navy.
Princess Anne
Princess Anne looked rather regal on Wednesday as she and husband Timothy Laurence watched the Household Division Musical Spectacular at Horse Guards Parade in London. If you are wondering what the musical spectacular entails, Royal Clubber Iona attended the show on Thursday and on Monday will be posting a video documenting her evening. I can’t wait!
If you answered yes, I’d love to know which one in the comments.
Queen Mathilde
Queen Mathilde of Belgium had an angel on her shoulder during a visit to see Hans Op de Beeck's ‘Nocturnal Journey' exhibition at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Hans Op de Beeck is a multidisciplinary artist who creates sculptures, monumental installations, drawings, and video and animation films, and has previously created busts of the king and queen.
