It might be her birthday but duty called for the Queen as she joined the King at the State Opening of Parliament earlier today.

The ceremony, which is steeped in ancient history, sets out the government’s agenda for Parliament’s new session.

Emily Nash will be talking more about the State Opening in her newsletter this week, but for now, let’s celebrate Camilla turning 77.

It has been a difficult year for the royal family amid the King and the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnoses, but the Queen has emerged as a loyal stalwart - stepping up her public engagements, while also supporting her husband.

Despite a security scare, a thunderstorm and a sprained ankle, Camilla’s smile never faltered during Their Majesties’ two-day visit to the Channel Islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Having joined the Queen on various engagements on the royal beat, I’ve been privileged to witness her brilliant sense of humour close-up, be that in the form of a mischievous wink or a light-hearted quip about her husband.

Yet her jovial manner conceals a serious determination to shine a light on issues close to her heart, including domestic violence and osteoporosis. During the pandemic, she even campaigned to get the nation reading more!
