And the winner is…
Yesterday I asked whether Melania should have curtsied upon arriving at Windsor Castle.
Sixty-six per cent of you said she yes! It’s clear she wasn’t required to (as explained in this article), so I’d be keen to hear why the majority of you think it was remiss of her not to curtsy.
Considering I tripped over on my front doorstep at 8am this morning, I don’t think I’d be much good at curtsying either...
Poll of the day
As you will have read, the tiaras were glittering and glowing at last night’s state banquet.
Personally I adored the tiara Princess Catherine wore to the banquet. Growing up, I was obsessed with films like The Princess Diaries, and her royal jewels are exactly what you picture in the movies – a real-life princess. I imagine it’s quite heavy though, and does she need to practise wearing it? (Like they do in the films with books on their heads, maybe?) I’d love to know…
So for poll of the day:
On the topic of tiaras…
As a newsletter bonus, I wanted to include this commentary from Justin Daughters, managing director at jewellery specialists Berganza, on the royals’ masterclass in ‘tiara diplomacy’:
“The state banquet is the ultimate moment for royal jewellery and last night’s event was a masterclass in ‘tiara diplomacy’. Both Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales used their headpieces to make a powerful, symbolic statement.
Queen Camilla’s choice of the Belgian Sapphire Tiara was a striking and regal decision. The tiara, which was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II, has a rich history that includes being refashioned from a 19th-century necklace. By wearing this magnificent piece, Camilla is not only celebrating her role as Queen but also honoring the legacy of her predecessor.
The Princess of Wales, meanwhile, wore her go-to showstopper: the Lover’s Knot Tiara. This iconic piece, originally made for Queen Mary and a favourite of the late Princess Diana, has now become synonymous with Catherine herself. Her choice to wear it signifies her comfort and confidence in her role, as well as a poignant tribute to her late mother-in-law.
These tiaras are far more than just beautiful accessories – they are potent symbols of the monarchy's enduring history and the personal narratives of the women who wear them. In the world of high diplomacy, every piece of jewellery is chosen with a purpose, and last night’s display was a perfect example of how heirlooms can convey a message of strength, stability, and continuity.”
I think it’s so empowering that royal women wear tiaras reflective of their own journeys within the royal family – they’re clearly very attuned to their roles as working royals and take them very seriously.
Picture of the day
I chose this for picture of the day purely for the coordination of Princess Catherine and Melania Trump’s outfits on their first engagement together.
The autumunal shades of olive green and light brown really work together – as do the ladies’ lighter honey hair.
Also I really like the subtle neck scarf of Princess Catherine, it’s a sophisticated way to accesorise an outfit and I wish I could pull it off!
What do you think of the pair’s outfits? And what do you think they are chatting about?
That’s always the real question for a journalist…
