William and Kate's big dilemma
Why they had to change their approach for Prince Louis' birthday
Hi everyone,
He’s the boy who sparked a thousand memes and as Prince Louis turned six yesterday, the world once again enjoyed an adorable photograph of William and Kate’s youngest son.
The fourth in line to the throne has long been a favourite with royal fans thanks to his hilarious facial expressions and exuberant approach to public appearances.
But this year, the tradition of sharing a carefully curated portrait of the little Prince to mark his special day almost fell by the wayside – for reasons that are not hard to understand.
Ever since their eldest son Prince George was a baby, William and Kate have issued photographs to mark their children’s birthdays and other special occasions. They have usually, but not always, been taken by Kate, who is an accomplished amateur photographer.
This approach has had the dual benefit of guarding the family’s privacy and allowing them to share what they want, when they want, and on their own terms.
It’s also a conscious and protective move away from the formal photoshoots of the past, which saw Prince William and Prince Harry facing a bank of cameras on their first days at school or at the start of holidays.
Over the years, it has resulted in wonderfully natural, endearing portraits of the royal children, who are clearly at their most relaxed and comfortable with their mother behind the lens instead of a stranger.
