The King and Queen in their Garter Day regalia, depart St George’s Chapel by carriage

Hi everyone,

I’ve just emerged from Windsor Castle, where the royal family have been taking part in one of their most colourful traditions.

I watched as the King and Queen, Prince of Wales, Princess Royal and Duke of Edinburgh walked in procession down the hill from the Castle’s Quadrangle to the West Door of St George’s Chapel, all wearing the glittering insignia, blue velvet robes and plumed caps of the Order of the Garter – the UK’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry.

You can watch my video from the royal event below.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who was installed as a Royal Lady Companion this year, were also among the procession watched on from the Chapel’s Galilee Porch by the Duchess of Edinburgh and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Lawrence, Princess Anne’s husband.

Normally the Princess of Wales would also join them as a spectator, but was continuing to focus on her recovery out of the spotlight today. The Duke of Kent, 88, travelled by car this year. The Duke of York attended the private lunch, but did not take part in the public events.

It was warm and sunny, but the wind seemed to be causing some trouble to those wearing feathered hats as they emerged after the religious service - Prince William in particular.
