Hello Royal Clubbers, it’s Millie here. Thanks to Danielle for covering last week’s The Royal Dispatch in my absence!

This week, we’ve seen Queen Camilla attend a harvest festival, William and Catherine head into nature, and lots of military action for the European royals.

Also a quick note from me to say that this month’s edition of The Royal Archive will be landing in your inbox next week, so keep an eye out for that!

Before we dive into the best royal pictures of the week, it’s time to head back in time…

On this day…

On 18 October 1016, Danes led by Cnut defeated the Saxon forces of Edmund Ironside at the Battle of Assandun. The kings agreed to split the country between them, with Edmund retaining Wessex while Cnut took Mercia and lands to the north.

However, within a few weeks of the battle, Edmund died. It’s thought that the death was caused either by natural causes or poison – one theory is that he was murdered on the toilet, although most historians dismiss this!

Whichever way it happened, Cnut became the sole ruler of England as a result.

I was very interested to learn that he sent Edmund’s two sons away to be killed in Sweden, but spared their lives in secret and sent them to the Kiev instead where his daughter was queen.

Cnut would rule England for nearly two decades.
