The Royal Dispatch
Danish royals have a celebration and Charles and Camilla in Canada
Hi Royal Clubbers, it’s Millie back again to bring you this week's edition of The Royal Dispatch.
It’s been a quieter week because of half term but there’s still plenty of royal activity to see as King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Canada early this week, and the European royals have been keeping busy too.
Also a note for royal fans this side of the pond, the Medieval Palace at the Tower of London has just opened up a new display looking beyond the Tudor influence on the Tower, at the Kings and Queens who shaped the Tower during the medieval period, but also the important, everyday lives of Medieval Londoners and the royal household, helping visitors to grasp what people’s real lives were like.
The Medieval Palace will have some really exciting new objects for you to see, including a Jewish mikveh ritual bath discovered in 2001, which belonged to a medieval Jewish family who lived in London around c.1200, and a wicker fish trap found in the Tower of London’s moat, which still contains fish bones.
If you have time to visit, I’d love to hear what you thought!
But before we get on to the best royal pictures of the week, time for some history.
On This Day…
On 31 May, 1279 BC, Rameses II was proclaimed pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.
He was the third king of the 19th dynasty and would go on to have the second-longest reign in Egyptian history. While best known for his military exploits, Rameses also built many temples and enormous statues of himself during his reign, including the temple at Abu Simbel which features four huge recreations of the pharaoh.
His first wife was the queen Nefertari, whom he appears to have favoured especially as she had a temple dedicated to her neighbouring his. As well as many wives and a harem, Rameses fathered over 100 children during his lifetime. He became known as Rameses the Great, and to this day is one of the most well-known Egyptian pharaohs.
Best Royal Pictures of The Week
Queen Letizia
This lovely moment was captured during a royal visit by Queen Letizia and King Felipe of Spain to the historic town of Guadalupe on Wednesday. The visit formed part of celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the king's proclamation, celebrating his ten years on the throne.
King Charles and Queen Camilla
A suitably grand welcome for the King and Queen who enjoyed a flying visit to Canada earlier this week. The royal couple opened the first session of the 45th parliament of Canada at the senate of Canada in Ottawa on Tuesday.
The King also raised a shovel after helping plant a ceremonial tree at the official residence of the Governor General of Canada.
Belgian royals
Queen Mathilde looked positively bridal in this sequin number as she attended the Queen Elisabeth contest at Bozar, a competition for young violinists, pianists, singers, and cellists on the threshold of an international career.
The queen also attended the final of the competition alongside her daughter, Princess Elisabeth. How regal do they both look!
King Frederik
What a fun family photograph this turned out to be, when a joke by Prince Vincent, shaking the paw of the family dog, had the whole royal family in stitches. The group gathered on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace on Monday as part of celebrations for the King’s 57th birthday.
Swedish royals
A glamorous evening for the Swedish royals, as Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, and Prince Daniel of Sweden attended the Polar Music Prize at the Grand Hôtel on Tuesday in Stockholm, Sweden. Don’t the princes look dapper!
King Felipe
King Felipe inspected the troops at the superior council of the army, at the army headquarters in Madrid, Spain, on Monday, which aims to analyse the main strategic challenges of land defence, the modernisation of operational capabilities and the participation of the Armed Forces in international missions.
