Princess Diana touching her eye
1997 was a year of tragedy in many ways

Hello Royal Clubbers, it's Millie here.

On Friday, King Charles and Queen Camilla were moved to tears hearing the first-hand testimony of VJ veterans as they spoke at a service of remembrance this afternoon marking 80 years since the end of the Second World War.

It was an emotional day for the King and Queen

Captain Yavar Abbas, from the 11th Sikh Regiment, saluted the King and Queen and spoke to them personally.

“Apologies for briefly going off the script to salute my brave King, who is here with his beloved Queen in spite of the fact that he is undergoing treatment for cancer.”

“I salute him for attending this occasion. By his presence here he has gone a long way to make sure that his Grandad’s 14th army is never given the sobriquet of the forgotten army.”

Both royals were moved to tears

Meanwhile, as the royals enjoy their summer sojourn, after remembering 2011 in last week’s post we’re casting our eyes back in time once again, this time to a year marred by tragedy: 1997. While naturally much royal news of this year focused on the tragic death of Princess Diana, there were plenty of other royal moments you may have missed…

But before we dive into the best royal pictures from 1997, let's take a little look back at some less recent royal history.
