Hello Royal Clubbers, happy Sunday! It’s Millie here with the latest edition of The Royal Dispatch, bringing you the best pictures and moments from the week, as well as a lookahead to what the royals are up to next week.
We couldn’t let a week pass without taking a trip back through history.
On this day…
On 16 February 1923, Egyptologist Howard Carter opened the burial chamber of the tomb of King Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.
As a king, there is nothing too noteworthy about Tutankhamun. The main impact of his short reign was restoring Egypt to its old gods, which had been forbidden by Tutankhamun’s father who believed in just one god, a sun god.
Tutankhamun died when he was 19, and he would have been reduced to a footnote in history had his tomb not been discovered by Howard and his team when stairs emerged from the sand in the Valley of the Kings, revealing the entrance to the tomb.
Over the course of ten years, Howard Carter removed and catalogued 5,000 items. Rumours of a pharaoh’s curse spread when Howard’s benefactor, Lord Carnarvon, died from an infected mosquito bite just months after the tomb opened.
When Howard gifted a friend an object from the tomb, the friend’s house burned down, then was rebuilt, and flooded, only adding to speculation. Howard himself died 17 years after the tomb was opened.
I’ve seen the tomb firsthand and it is a marvel, though much smaller than its neighbours as Tutankhamun had far less time to complete it than some of his fellow pharaohs did theirs. The walls are painted in colours that are still vibrant even thousands of years later. The incredible preservation from both the techniques of the ancient Egyptians and the dry desert air mean that we have a window back in time.
