Incognito royal celebrations, relocations, holidays and more...
Hello Royal Clubbers, it's Danielle here.
While many of the royals are now enjoying their summer holidays, we were delighted to hear the happy news of Peter Phillips’ engagement to Harriet Sperling.
But before we dive into the best royal pictures and the diary, let's take a little look back at some royal history.
On This Day…
On this day in royal history, 2 August 1100, King William II of England (William Rufus) was killed in a freak hunting accident when an arrow shot by Sir Walter Tyrell hit him, while hunting in the New Forest.
William was the third son of William the Conqueror, and strangely his elder brother Richard also died in a hunting accident while in the New Forest, nearly thirty years previous.
Chroniclers recorded the event as an accident, but Sir Walter fled the scene, and the hunting party left William’s body in the forest, where it was found by locals and brought to Winchester Cathedral. Henry I, William’s younger brother, was crowned not long after.
It has long baffled historians – was it an accident? Was Walter an assassin of Henry I? Why did the party abandon William’s body?
I’d love to hear your theories!
