The “Brave King”, as hailed by a VJ Day veteran, and Queen, at today’s service of remembrance

Hi Royal Clubbers, it’s Emily

As this lands in your inbox, the second of two major anniversaries this year is wrapping up at the National Memorial Arboretum, where the King and Queen have led the nation in marking 80 years since VJ Day.

The solemn events to mark the anniversary of Japan’s surrender, which ended the Second World War in the Far East, are rightly the main focus for the royal family today, even if one of their stalwarts, the Princess Royal is celebrating her 75th birthday.

Buckingham Palace carefully planned when they would share two new portraits of the King’s sister to ensure they landed ahead of the poignant national events, more on which in a moment.

On a far less serious note, however, today also marks my last day at work before a long-awaited summer holiday, so I wanted to leave you with a round-up of the key moments that have stood out to me so far this year.

When I started thinking about this a couple of days ago, it struck me that rather than one-off moments, there have been some clear themes coming through. From keeping calm and “buggering on” to high level soft diplomacy and from drawing in an A-list crowd to the future direction of the royal family, read on to see if you agree.
