Inside the life of a royal photographer
The challenges of covering Prince George's birth and more...
Hi Royal Clubbers,
It's Ainhoa here with my weekly Monday newsletter.
When we first launched the Club late last year, we only had a few thousand subscribers. To date, we're proud to have some 55,000 members, and I wanted to re-share an interview I did with royal and AFP photographer Ben Stansall, as some of you may not have come across it when we first started posting.
Working as a royal photographer may come with its pressures and challenges – being part of the media scrum, waiting (sometimes for hours) for the briefest of appearances, and striving to be the first to file a photo.
But it's also a position of incredible privilege. Ben gave me an exclusive insight into what it's like to work on the royal beat and, on occasion, be a part of history.
He's been covering the royals since 2010. Some of his most notable assignments include the births of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and, more recently, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
He also covered William and Catherine's engagement announcement back in 2010 which you can read about in depth here.
Given that Prince George is turning 11 later this month, I thought now would be a good time to relive the hype (and hysteria!) surrounding his birth, which was dubbed the 'Great Kate Wait' by the media.
Take it away Ben…
