Frederik is proclaimed King of Denmark
A new era of Danish royal history begins with a kiss
It's official. Frederik and Mary are the new King and Queen of Denmark.
Just one hour after Queen Margrethe II formally signed a declaration of abdication at a Council of State meeting, her eldest son was proclaimed King Frederik X from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.
It came two weeks after the Danish Queen surprised us all when she announced her decision to formally abdicate.
And while there was a tinge of sadness to the day as the Danes bid a fond farewell to their Queen of 52 years, the atmosphere, to me, also appeared celebratory.
In the days leading up to the abdication, the Danish royal palace's social media team had A LOT of fun, choosing The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony as Margrethe hosted her last reception and Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want To Have Fun for a highlights reel.
It's testament to Margrethe, who is known for her love of arts and culture.
It was an incredibly moving moment as Her Majesty solemnly stood up from her chair at head of the table after signing the declaration and gestured to her son, the now King Frederik.
As Frederik moved into her place, Queen Margrethe, blinking back tears, declared: "God Save The King!"
When the moment of his proclamation came, Frederik wiped tears from his eyes as he addressed the thousands in the crowd for the first time as monarch.
"My hope is to become a unifying king for the future... It's a responsibility I assume with respect, pride and a lot of happiness," he said, with his hand on his heart.
And then as his proud wife, Queen Mary, joined him on the balcony, the crowd erupted in huge cheers as the couple kissed.
With Mary seemingly following a precedent set by other European queens, wearing a white gown by Soeren Le Schmidt and sewn by Birgit Hallstein, and Frederik dressed in military uniform, it echoed pictures from their wedding day nearly 20 years ago.
The King and Queen were then joined on the balcony by their children, now Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, before the family travelled back to Amalienborg for a brief second appearance.
