prince william at commonwealth service; kate middleton's photoshopped mother's day photo
William looked tense as he arrived at Monday's Commonwealth Day service

Hi Royal Clubbers,

I can't believe it was only yesterday that the Princess of Wales' new family photo with her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis was released via the palace. Who knew her Mother's Day picture would court so much controversy?

The internet was awash with theories that the Wales' family portrait had been doctored and Photoshopped, and when major international photo agencies including Reuters, AP, Getty, and AFP sent out a "kill notice" – essentially saying the photo was not fit for purpose – it just tipped everything over the edge.

Some of the noticeable, poorly-executed edits include part of Kate's zipper missing, misalignment on Charlotte's skirt and sleeve, misalignment on the step behind Louis, and the misaligned pattern on Louis' jumper.

The royals would usually stick to their mantra of "Never complain, never explain", but in a very rare move, Princess Kate decided to speak out and admit that she had edited the photo.

Apologising, she said in an official statement: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C."

It was a big move from the royals, who would normally lie low and hope any controversy would blow over. But the level of outrage and disbelief the photo caused meant they were left with no choice but to say something, even if it was very brief.
