Hi, Royal Clubbers, happy Friday. A year ago today, Kensington Palace sent royal fans into a tailspin by announcing Princess Catherine's admission to hospital for a planned abdominal surgery.
What followed that moment was a whirlwind of speculation as the Princess stayed absent from public life for longer than scheduled, culminating in the incredibly rare release of a video by Catherine revealing she had cancer.
Read on to find out how our Royal Editor Emily Nash shared the news one year ago…
We have just had the announcement from Kensington Palace that the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery. Princess Kate is expected to remain at The London Clinic for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery. She is unlikely to return to royal duties until after Easter, and the palace has said they'll be keeping us posted on any updates.
I've shared my reaction in the voicenote below. And please be sure to look out for my Wednesday newsletter I will be posting later (exclusively for our paid subscribers) in which I'll be writing about the news in greater detail.
Transcript: Hi, this is Emily. I'm working on a newsletter about this for this evening, but I wanted to jump on because we've just had the major announcement from Kensington Palace that the Princess of Wales is in hospital. She's recovering from planned abdominal surgery, and she's going to be there for 10 to 14 days.
Now, I'm told that this condition is not cancerous, but other details are understandably being kept private. It's a medical condition, the royals never really share the details of that. But what we are being told is that William and Kate will obviously not be seen in public on engagements for quite some time, William is planning to be at his wife's side and looking after the children during her stay in hospital, and also for the period in which she's discharged and goes back home to Windsor.
We won't see them travelling, despite all our predictions for this year, over the next few months, and we are likely not to see Kate on engagements until after Easter, so major announcement from Kensington Palace, everyone here at HELLO! is wishing the Princess all the best and hoping for a speedy recovery and we’ll bring you more in the coming hours.
