A new home for William and Catherine?
Royal Editor Emily Nash explores why a move could be more than summer speculation
August is upon us and so too is “silly season” – the period of summer where newspaper headlines often stretch further than facts.
So when a story popped up this week, suggesting that the Prince and Princess of Wales were considering a move to Fort Belvedere on the Windsor Estate, the former home of King Edward VIII, it was met with raised eyebrows from seasoned royal watchers.
It certainly gave me a sense of déjà vu. Back in 2021, the same story did the rounds, but rumours that the gothic revival mansion was being considered as a potential home for the young family were swiftly denied by palace aides.
The following year, William and Catherine instead settled into life at the more modest, four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage, in the shadow of Windsor Castle.
I’m told they’ve been very happy there, enjoying precious time together as a family of five, with no live in staff and with easy access to Lambrook, the Berkshire school attended by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
But that doesn’t mean they’ll stay forever.
So where next?
