Hello Royal Clubbers, it’s Danielle here with this month’s edition of the Royal Wardrobe, and I thought it would be fitting to take a closer look at the literal King of sustainable style himself – Charles III – given his 77th birthday celebrations on Friday.

While you might not think of His Majesty as an obvious fashion icon, Charles has long been flying the flag for the British textile industry. Rather much like his frugal sister, the Princess Royal, he has long advocated the importance of the wartime mantra “make do and mend,” opting to repair pieces he’s had in his wardrobe for decades.

In an interview with British Vogue in 2020, King Charles admitted: “I’m one of those people who hate throwing anything away. Hence, I’d rather have them maintained, even patched, if necessary, than to abandon them.”

The King has a well-worn Barbour-style coat that has been heavily patched to wear for his hedge-laying hobby – a jacket which caused a stir when he wore it on an episode of BBC’s Countryfile in 2013. Then there’s a pair of shoes made from leather salvaged from an 18th-century wreck, which he has previously said “will see me out”.

While the King is renowned for some of the quirkier items of clothing in his wardrobe, he has a penchant for impeccable tailoring and modernising pieces from two decades ago. It’s a passion he has also brought into his charitable work, through education programmes within his King’s Foundation.

In 2009, the King’s Foundation also began a partnership with e-commerce company, Yoox Net-A-Porter, which provides training for fashion graduates in sustainable design and craftsmanship. On Christmas Day last year, the King’s niece, Princess Beatrice, chose to wear a brown coat from the Modern Artisan collection in support of the initiative.

Charles has implemented organic farming at his Highgrove and Sandringham estates, and is patron of the Campaign for Wool, which he convened in 2010 to raise awareness about the fibre’s natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits.

Hi Royal Clubbers, it’s Danielle here with this month’s edition of The Royal Wardrobe. With today marking seven years since Princess Eugenie tied the knot with Jack Brooksbank, I thought it would be fitting to take a closer look at some royal wedding fashion traditions.

Some of the guidelines around royal nuptials have been followed for over one hundred years, but others have been introduced within the current House of Windsor family. And while many brides carry on these traditions, some have decided to break the mould or put their own stamp on their nuptials.

Casting your minds back to a sunny but blustery day at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in October 2018, Princess Eugenie married her long-term love Jack in a beautiful, autumnal-themed ceremony. The blushing bride was the vision of an English rose in a wedding dress created by British-based design duo, Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos of Peter Pilotto.

Meanwhile, Prince George and Princess Charlotte were chosen to be among the young bridal party, wearing outfits designed by childrenswear designer Amaia London.

In honour of the Braemar Gathering this weekend and the King and Queen's summer retreat to Balmoral, I wanted to take a look back at the history of royal tartan. Did you know that the Windsors have their own personal plaid?

The Balmoral tartan, which is predominantly grey with overchecks of red and black, was designed by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, in 1853. It is restricted in its use so only the King, members of the royal family and the piper to the sovereign can wear the Balmoral tartan.

Given the Princess Royal’s upcoming 75th birthday, I thought it would be fitting to take a look back at her summer style through the years (in case you missed it, Emily’s Friday newsletter was also Anne themed and is a typically insightful read).

Princess Anne is renowned for her frugal fashion sense, paired with her signature bouffant hairstyle, which she once revealed she does herself and takes “ten to 15 minutes” in the morning.

She’s a serial outfit repeater, wearing pieces from her wardrobe from 30 or 40 years ago, time and time again.

Anne is often dubbed the hardest-working member of the royal family, and her wardrobe works just as hard for her.

Hello Royal Clubbers, it's Danielle here with this month's edition of the Royal Wardrobe.

Given the VE Day commemorations this week, I thought it would be appropriate both to delve into how modern royals pay tribute to the wartime generation, and how the Windsors' wardrobes in the 1940s reflected the age of austerity.

For the procession and the flypast on Monday, the King reflected what his grandfather George VI wore when he stepped onto the Buckingham Palace balcony on VE Day 80 years ago.

Charles poignantly chose to wear the naval No.1 dress uniform without medals, just like George VI.

The Queen paid tribute to her family's military legacy with a 12th Royal Lancers brooch – her late father's regiment – pinned to her sapphire blue wool crepe dress and coat.

The Princess of Wales also wore a brooch fit for the occasion – an RAF wings pin. It was a subtle tribute to Catherine's grandfather, who served in the RAF as a fighter pilot during the Second World War.

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal wore the uniform of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps), emulating what the late Queen Elizabeth II wore when she was a princess appearing on the Palace balcony on VE Day in 1945.

Hello Royal Clubbers, it's Danielle here with this month's edition of The Royal Wardrobe.

The A-listers will descend upon London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday for the BAFTAs, but sadly the Prince and Princess of Wales will not be gracing the red carpet this year.

It will mark the second year in succession Prince William has missed the ceremony, the first time he has missed consecutive awards since he succeeded actor and director Richard Attenborough as president of BAFTA in 2010

The Prince's focus this year is on the next generation and he joined students to film a project at the London Screen Academy (LSA) in Highbury, north London, on Wednesday.

Sadly we will also miss a surefire sartorial spectacular from Princess Catherine, who over her years attending the awards has wowed in an array of jawdropping dresses: including a floral bardot-style number to a bridal-esque one-shoulder gown, both by Alexander McQueen.

Royal fashion at the movies was even more opulent a few decades ago, with tiaras commonly worn for film premieres and the theatre.

It's Danielle here with a European-themed The Royal Wardrobe.

This week saw King Frederik of Denmark’s first anniversary on the throne. His wife is the eminently fashionable Mary, and it is she who has inspired this month’s post on Europe’s most fashionable queens.

I conducted an interesting deep dive into Australian-born Mary's style this time last year, ahead of Frederik's accession.

While the Danish queen can now access some even more impressive jewels from the royal collection, her style mantra has pretty much remained the same.

Mary is the queen of sustainability and in her first year as consort, we've seen her rewear outfits and gowns from the archives as well as turning to her trusted dressmaker, Birgit Hallstein, to modify some of her most iconic dresses.

My fellow royal clubber Millie compiled some of Mary's best looks from her first year as queen in Tuesday's newsletter. You were able to vote on them and though the poll has now closed, you can see which was the most popular with your fellow Royal Clubbers. I’ve seen the results and it was close run thing!

The royal family will soon retreat to Sandringham to celebrate Christmas, with the King and Queen and their family members stepping out for the annual walk to St Mary Magdalene church for the morning service.
